Juice Fasting and Detox Diets

Ever tried juice fasting or an extreme detox diet and felt like you could be blown over with a light breeze? Many people report feeling weak, lethargic, low energy, and sometimes downright dreadful (not to mention HUNGRY) during any type of detox. Advocates of this type of cleansing will tell you it's just the toxins being flushed out of your system. I believe detoxing has its place, but I don't believe in extremism! I think many of us (yes, myself included) can tend to be so brutal and unforgiving with our bodies. Not eating well, then doing a sudden fast or cleanse can actually stress our bodies and minds so much that the end result is detrimental.

If you feel drawn to do a spring clean for your body by juice fasting or any other method, try working it in to your daily routine so that you can still function during the day, and the wonderful properties of the juice actually have a chance to make you feel GOOD.

For example, let's say you had a few weeks (or even a season) of heavy, rich foods, and were looking to clean out your system and get back on track. What most people do in our busy day and age is to say something like: "Ok, from Monday I will only drink water and juice and I won't eat for a week."

A healthier alternative would be to begin that same Monday incorporating one large salad, a piece of fresh fruit, and a glass of freshly made juice each day. Then work up from there - let's say Tuesday was a salad, 2 pieces of fruit, a large glass of juice, Wednesday was the same with an additional 2 cups of steamed greens, etc etc.

If you're really into the idea of only drinking fresh-made *veggie & fruit juices for a while, work up to it! I know you may not feel it's drastic enough, but perhaps we need to look at why we so often feel the need to do something drastic! This most often results in us feeling worse.

GENTLE IS THE KEY!!

*A quick note on juicing - if you are increasing your intake of fresh juices, make sure they're veggie or a mix of fruit and veggie juices, as straight fruit juices contain a fairly large amount of sugar.
