Healthy Travel - Two of My Favorite Things Combined!!
Healthy travel - a reason to seek out some of the best kept secrets in the world! When I'm on the road, whether on a road trip in my own country, or touring internationally, one of the first places I search for is a good local market. Some countries have spectacular outdoor farmers markets, overflowing with veggies & fruits (some of which I've never seen before!). Be it an outdoor market, or an indoor grocery, I find that a look around either is a great introduction to a new culture. It also gives me the opportunity to stock up on healthy snacks & fruits. They often showcase local crafts & clothes, too. And by shopping here, you're supporting local growers & producers.
Some of the best markets I've been to are:
1) Provence, France!! Oh, so amazing - local produce to die for, from veggies & olives, to wine & goat's cheeses. Artichokes the size of your head...a salad-maker's dream.2) Central America, particularly Guatemala & Costa Rica I was lucky enough to spend a couple months living just outside a town with a lovely local market where I bought all my produce, including herbs & teas. We'd go in the morning, and get this amazing fresh-squeezed tropical juice..mmmm, I can almost taste it now...
3) Barcelona, Spain I love the city Central Market right off La Rambla - it's covered, and offers everything from local tapas & dishes to the freshest fruits & seafood. And of course, spices...
3 Essential Tips for Healthy Travel
Aside from seeking out markets, that is!1) Be aware of your water. If you're in a country that doesn't purify their water, make sure you drink bottled water, and avoid veggies that have been washed in tap water. Also avoid drinks with ice from tap water. 2) Strive to eat veggies at every meal, and snack on fresh fruit. 3) Where possible, cook for yourself - it's easier to know what's going in the food. When it's not possible, carry healthy snacks with you, so you don't become ravenous and have limited options.
