Healthy Snack Ideas to Keep You Going..
Are you looking for healthy snack ideas? Confused with all the mixed advice out there about whether you should even be snacking in the first place?
Are you one of those people who won't make it through the day without eating something every few hours? My healthy snack ideas are for you! Some people are perfectly fine eating 3 square meals a day and not snacking at all. But others just need something to help keep their blood sugar stable and to avoid those sudden drops in energy. You know better than anyone which type of person you are. Do you get really cranky and irritable and difficult to be around when you're hungry? Or are you one of those people who sometimes skip meals without even realizing? Most likely, you're somewhere in between, and, like many people, can benefit from healthy snacks, so long as you don't overdo it! Snacking on wholesome foods can help keep your blood sugar stable, while adding to your daily nutrition and enjoyment. The danger for many is not paying attention to how much you are eating at snacktime. If you eat too much, regularly, in between meals, then you may find you're not very hungry during meals, you eat less, and then are hungry later on. This leads to more snacking, and the pattern repeats. Doing this on a regular basis can lead to weight gain, and basically, to food confusion! I recommend simply tuning into yourself before a snack - noticing how hungry you are, and deciding how much you are going to eat. For example, if you just need a quick bit to get you through to your next meal in an hour or so, then just have an apple, or a handful of trailmix, and put the rest away. If you're really hungry, and still have hours before mealtime, then eat something more substantial (see ideas below). When we get hungry between meals, it just seems too simple to grab something that's not good for us, simply because it's less hassle. I saw this as a challenge, and I've come up with some healthy snack ideas which are just as easy, if not easier than the fast-food options, and will leave you feeling great!
Here are some ideas for when you're at home:
1) Carrot or cucumber sticks make great carriers for low fat cheeses, hommous, and dips. Keep them cut and ready in your fridge.2) Rye crackers with peanut or almond butter will offer a stable boost to your blood sugar and keep you going. 3) Leftover soup is one of my favorite snacks! It's filling, takes 2 minutes to heat up, and is a good way to get in some extra veggies. 4) Stuffed grape leaves or dolmas are an unusual, but yummy snack. They're usually stuffed with rice and herbs, so are a healthy and satisfying option. I usually eat them alone but if you want a but more, put them on a cracker or wrap in half a tortilla with a bit of hommous.
And a few ideas for when you're
on the road:
1) Mix together some of your favorite dried fruit and nuts. If you're worried you'll eat too much of it, put single servings in little bags and carry them with you.2) Fruit fruit fruit! Keep fresh fruit with you, it's the perfect snack. Most fruit is more digestible when eaten on its own, but if you're one of those people who just needs a bit extra, have a few nuts, a piece of cheese, or even a bit of smoked tofu with it for a bit of a protein kick. 3) Sushi is a fantastic healthy snack idea, and if you don't have time to make your own, it can be found in most supermarkets as a prepared food. If you don't want to travel with (or eat) raw fish, get the veggie variety - it's great!
Healthy snack ideas are only as limited as your imagination. Just because something isn't normally percieved as a snack, doesn't mean it can't be perfect as a smaller portion. Get creative and figure out what kind of foods really satiate you. The trick is to keep your blood sugar stable throughout the day. This will help avoid mood swings, panic eating, and binges. Don't forget to stay hydrated -
keep drinking your water!
Thirst is very commonly mistaken for hunger. Good luck and healthy snacking!!
