Ready for a Healthy Pregnancy? Here are the Basics..
First of all, congratulations! A healthy pregnancy should be relatively straightforward and enjoyable. I've said it before on this site, and I'll say it again, I am NOT a doctor. What I am is a health and nutrition counselor, and an educated mother. While I'm always seeking to learn more, I'm also happy to pass on knowledge that's been helpful to me. First thing that all sources recommend when pregnant (or when trying), is to take a folic acid supplement. This reduces risk of some birth defects (including neural tube underdevelopment), and of miscarriage. It's difficult to get enough folic acid from diet alone. Continue to eat a wholesome, varied diet, and don't forget to eat those leafy green veggies! They're more important now than ever, as baby will take loads of nutrients from you for growth. Stay hydrated, as your body needs moisture to grow a whole new person. Remain moderately active. Certainly don't overdo it, but exercising, when possible, will keep you fit and oxygenate both you and baby. You can eat most foods, but avoid those on the nhs list, which include (but are not limited to) raw or undercooked animal products, unwashed fruit & veg, and those too high in vitamin A. And check out the current guidelines for how much fish is ok to eat during pregnancy. Don't forget to get as much rest as you can - your body's doing a lot of work - growing a new human being!! Enjoy this miraculous time, and the wonders of creating a new life..it happens to millions to people, and yet its anything but ordinary what our bodies can do!
