Getting Down to Business and Basic Healthy Eating Guidelines
Are you looking for a comprehensive healthy eating handbook? This is my favorite e-book on the subject - Melanie (the author) makes it easy & enjoyable. Highly recommended - everyone should have a copy. |
I'd like to jump right into some healthy eating guidelines and basics for those of you who are just raring to go. For the sake of simplicity, we'll talk about my basic top 5 tips here, and you can find lots more specifics, and heaps of
tips
and advice, elsewhere in this site. 1) EAT YOUR GREENS!! 2) Drink enough water. 3) Eat a variety of fresh fruit & veg every single day. 4) Make healthy food interesting and tasty, so you WANT to eat it. 5) Keep your blood sugar stable by eating regularly, and not overeating at each meal (remember, there's always another one round the corner).
Want to know why these healthy eating guidelines are important? Read on...
1) Eat Your GreensGreen vegetables, particularly green leafy ones, are one of the richest sources of vitamins & minerals on the planet! They've got heaps of iron, more calcium per oz than dairy, vitamin C, and folic acid, a B vitamin which is particularly important if you're pregnant, as it's essential for cell growth and reproduction. You'll also get the fat soluble vitamins such as A, D, E & K. These need a little bit of dietary fat in order for the body to absorb them. When you eat dark green vegetables, make sure to add a teaspoon of healthy fat, such as olive oil, a bit of cheese or salad dressing to make sure your body absorbs all of the vitamins you eat. All the nutrients you'll get will help boost your energy to new levels! 2) Drink Enough Water Many people don't realize that dehydration, even in a mild form, is a primary cause of hundreds of common ailments & niggly health woes. You may know about headaches, but did you know that joint pain, extreme fatigue & some skin maladies can also be from not getting enough water in you? 3) Eat a variety of fresh fruit & veg every single day Variety is the key to keeping it interesting and covering all your bases (healthily-speaking, of course!). 4) Make healthy food interesting and tasty, so you WANT to eat it This sort of answers it's own question of "why?" No one wants to eat bland food - keep it fun & delicious! 5) Keep your blood sugar stable by eating regularly, and not overeating at each meal (remember, there's always another one round the corner) If your blood sugar drops & you become ravenous, you're more likely to eat whatever's around and lose your healthy motivation. Carry healthy snacks with you if you're someone who needs to eat often.
