Drink More Water...A Little Thing That Makes A BIG Difference!
Drink more water. It sounds so simple, and we've heard it before, yet most of us spend a good deal of time under-hydrated. Many people think it only applies during hot weather or in dry climates. But this is an important rule for everyone, everywhere! In wintertime, we often bundle up and sweat, plus it takes more energy on your body's part to keep you toasty. In damp climates you might not feel as thirsty, but your body can't get all is liquid needs through your skin. If you're well hydrated, your body will be in better condition to handle any conditions, and better able to adapt to whatever mohter nature throws at you. I don't want to talk about all the evils of dehydration, instead, I'd like to encourage us all to drink more water. Here are some nifty ways to increase our consumption of H2O. 1) Carry it with you. In the States, people often seem to be attached at the hip to their water bottles. I don't see it as often in the UK. Whether it's a bottle for water, or a travel mug for tea, it's a good idea to keep some hydrating beverage with you during the day. It simply makes it easier and does away with any excuses. 2) Add a bit of juice or cordial to a large glass or bottle - it makes it taste more interesting and will keep you sipping more. I have a wonderful nettle cordial, which is concentrated nettles, for iron & vitamins, and a bit of sugar to sweeten (once diluted, the sugar intake is minimal, and worth it for the extra hydration I get). I add a drop of this to my glass, and I love it! 3) Drink a large glass of water on awakening in the morning. It starts the day off on the right foot. You can add lemon or a drop of juice for flavor if you like. I keep a full pint glass by my bedside, so I can't forget! 4) When offered tea or coffee, which contain caffeine & are dehydrating, FIRST ask for a cup of hot water. Drink this and THEN if you'd like a cup of something else, go ahead. The hot water will help dilute the effects of caffeine on your system. I sometimes carry my favorite herbal teabags with me, so when I'm offered a cup of tea or coffee, I'm prepared with an alternative. 5) If you feel hungry or tired, or your skin seems dry, yep, you guessed it, DRINK MORE WATER!
